STI's and Contraception

  • Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI’s) - Sexual health includes discussing sexual ill-health. This workshop is designed to train the trainer giving participants facts about sexually transmitted infections, safer sex and other relevant information in a way that can be meaningfully and contextually passed on to young people. These workshops are designed to address the challenges faced by the professional when working with these issues within this age group. Workshop outcomes: Participants will have a sound knowledge of the most common sexually transmitted infections (STI’s). Signposting information will be delivered throughout. This workshop will be delivered via a sex positive approach that is inclusive, with skills directly transferable to practice a this is an essential component of delivering effective knowledge based sex and relationships education (SRE) and supporting sexual health in the nation.

 

  • Contraception Starts Here – For those who may need to give information and advice about contraception this training gives you the basic knowledge on this specialist field. The different methods will be discussed, including their efficacy, availability and suitability. Participants will be confident with regards to their professional responsibilities and be aware of Fraser Guidelines, the Sex Offences Act 2003, and rights to confidentiality. Safe Guarding Children issues will be explored and participants will be able to identify possible coercion and or exploitation issues following this training. Faith, diversity and cultural issues will also be discussed during the day. This training will enable the professional to confidently discuss contraception with young people and signpost them to the appropriate agencies.

 

  • Sex and the law: Sex Offences Act (2003)– Whilst it is acknowledged that some young people choose to explore their sexuality and sexual relationships as a normal part of their adolescent development, there are times when there is coercion and exploitation. This training breaks down what the sex offences act (2003) says. Fraser Guidelines will be discussed, as will professional responsibilities and issues surrounding sexual exploitation and safe guarding children. Following this training the professional will be able to competently and confidently assess the young person to exclude coercion and exploitation issues and be aware of the legal framework that guides practice.

 

  • Sexual Health Risk-Taking Behaviours – The sexual health of our young people is of grave concern. Britain has the highest rates of teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections in Western Europe. (Wales having the highest incidence of both.) Our young people are engaging in health risk behaviours. This has huge ramifications upon their futures (and that of healthcare providers). This training aims to examine to look at the key issues and the reasons why young people engage in sexual health risk behaviours. Various approaches and interventions designed to minimise impact on ill-health will be explored. The issues will be framed contextually and national policy and influencing strategies will be discussed with regards to delivering effective interventions following best practice guidelines. Participants will be aware of how to raise awareness and facilitate meaningful discussions with their client groups with the aim of minimising sexual health risk behaviours. Signposting options will be discussed including safeguarding children issues.
